FAQ

What is Sugarcane Bagasse??

Bagasse is a byproduct created during the process of extracting juice from sugarcane. During this process, sugarcane is crushed and the juice is collected, leaving stalks behind that can be easily turned into bagasse. Since bagasse is essentially sugarcane fiber, it can then be used instead of other fibers like wood or straw as paper pulp in the paper product-making process.

Bagasse packaging is suitable for home and industrial composting. It will break down quickly in composting conditions and create nutrient-rich compost. This makes it a perfect packaging solution for food service as the packaging and any remaining food can go straight into the compost bin and be diverted from landfills.

Trees take a long time to grow to maturity before they can be harvested (7-10 years), and to harvest them, acres of land are cleared, making it a resource-intensive process. Sugarcane, on the other hand, can be harvested annually, making it a rapidly renewable resource.

What is PLA?

PLA is a compostable bioplastic derived from plant sugars. PLA stands for polylactic acid. It can be made from any sugar, such as corn starch, cassava, sugar cane, or sugar beet. Corn is the primary source for PLA manufacturing currently, but other feed crops are being investigated as viable sources.
